五嶋みどりは国際的に傑出したヴァイオリニストとして著名である。本稿は、彼女を幼くして並はずれた技能をもつヴァイオリニストとなしえた要因を探ろうとする試みである。とりわけ、世界の音楽界の頂点に立つ彼女の活動を可能にさせた家庭での教育がどのようなものであったのかを追究してみることにした。高度の音楽的技術を生み出すには才能だけでなく、たゆまざる努力を重ねなければならないことはだれもが認めるところであろう。優れた芸術家であっても専門分野の最も高い水準の域に到達することの困難さは、音楽界においてもごく普通にみられる事象である。しかし、その分野におけるごく少数の抜きんでた存在として認められることを目指して、平生の日々において、若い人たちが技術の習得のために練習に精を出し尽力しているのは何によるものなのであろうか。専門分野での最高峰の地位を切望するどの音楽家でも、大きな犠牲を払う心構えがなければならないはずである。多くの者が中途で脱落していくなかで、そのような代償をすすんで払い、それによって得るものは何であろうか。大抵の場合、子供がその素質をもって興味を示す事柄に子供を方向づけることは親の責任である。たとえ時には、親が子供をそのように導きながらもそれを強要していると受け取られても。本稿では、みどりの母・五嶋節がわが子を幼児期から将来音楽家として大成させるため、その素質を伸ばそうとした教育のあり方を論じてみることにする。五嶋節は大学時代ヴァイオリンを専攻したが、結婚のためその志を果たすことができなかった。みどりは彼女の初めての子であった。そのため、長年いだいていた世界的なヴァイオリニストになる夢をわが子に託したのである。なお論文執筆にあたって援用した主な資料は、奥田明則著『母と神童-五嶋節物語』である。

Midori Goto is internationally known as an outstanding violinist. This paper will examine the factors in her life that enabled her to become such an eminent musician at an early age. It will deal in particular with the family influences and education that resulted in her attaining prominence in the world of music. It is widely acknowledged that it is the combination of talent and Herculean efforts that produces musical skill which towers above the merely talented. The excellent artist who never rises to the highest level of the profession, is a common sight in the world of music. But what is it that causes young people to diligently apply themselves day after day, in order that they might join the "chosen few"? Any musician who aspires to the top ranks of the profession must be prepared to pay a high price. What is it that makes some both able, and willing, to pay such a price, while others fall by the wayside? In most cases, when a child shows aptitude and interest, it is the responsibility of the parents to guide her of him, even if at times they seem to be coercing the child as they give it guidance. This paper will discuss the influence of Setsu Goto, Midori's mother, on her daughter's early development as a musician. Mrs. Goto had majored in violin when she was a college student, but she left school before graduating, in order to marry and Midori was he first child. Subsequently Setsu Goto, who had been forced to put aside her long cherished desire to become a world class musician, focused those dreams on her daughter. The major source for the material in this paper came from the book by Akinori Okuda entitled "Haha to Shindo-Goto Setsu Monogatari" (Mother and An Infant Prodigy-the Story of Setsu Goto).
