Viewing from the point of structure of books, only Western-style book needs it. It has no trace of being used before the period of mid-Meiji era when the technology of Western-style book-making was first introduced and established. Referring to the relevant literature, what the term "mikaeshi" had been adopted by Japanese-style books to align with the prosperity seen in Western-style book making of the time.
