Using literature and pictorial materials from that time, the change in the aesthetic sense of observers was studied. The documentary survey revealed that the definition of women's beauty from the 1600s to the early 1700s consisted of the emotional act of looking and facial aspect of sorrow. In the late 1700s, there was an increase in the number of writings that described women's beauty in terms of their bodies. Expressions such as ample bosom, square and sloping shoulders, tall, and straight back were commonly used in this literature. This indicates that the definition of beauty changed from aspects related to the mind to the outward appearance of the body and the artistic appeal of women's figures.
