In Japan, as the country opened to western influence from just before the Meiji Restoration to the Early Showa Era, many Western classical style buildings were built. In the Early Meiji Era, the main designers of buildings were foreign architects hired by the Japanese government, or Japanese architects who had successfully studied architecture under foreigners. Representative architects from this period are Josiah Conder, Toukuma Katayama, and Kingo Tatsuno. I have investigated the characteristics of Western classical style architecture designed by these architects.
