Reason [Rhyme's Reason]は、詩、特に英語の詩・韻文の法則、またその特質を、実際に詩を使って分かりやすく説明した書である。「詩」で「詩」を、「韻文」で「韻文」を説明するところが、本著の特色であり、面白くユニークなところである。そこがまた翻訳を困難にしてもいるのであるが。本稿はその冒頭「詩とは何か」から「韻律について」の前半部分の翻訳である。「詩」は、我々の生に不可欠なものとして確と存在するが、その定義は不可能に近い。一方、「韻文」はまず、その韻律から説明が可能になる。英詩はヨーロッパ古典の伝統に則りつつも、言語の特質の違いから、韻律の拠って立つところが、音節の「量」(quantity)から「強さ」(stress)へと大きく変化し、独自性を形成した。その独自性を活かした韻律をiamb(弱強格)、trochee(強弱格)、spondee(強強格)、dactyl(強弱弱格)、anapest(弱弱強格)と分類する。また行における「歩」の数からも説明が可能となり、iambic
