We describe the contents of a typical lesson devised using a standard model of arithmetic. The teaching method involved a technique of carefully dividing a school hour into smaller segments based on concentration levels of the students. Specifically, an hour was divided into set time periods for explanation, practice, and checking. The paper describes the way in which this approach was conveyed to primary school teachers in training at the university where the author works. Results from a questionnaire given to the teachers are described.
